Janet Dodd née Armstrong was married to Sergeant Henry Dodd. Henry was landless and the marriage had brought property into the family. Henry had purchased his position as sergeant with a loan from Janet's family.
Janet road to Carlisle after being told that Jemmy Atkinson had been killed. When she heard Kate Atkinson had been arrested for the crime, she questioned Julia Coldale, Kate's cousin and maidservant. Once she had answers to her questions, she went to talk to Robert Carey. She told Carey that no sane woman would commit such a murder in her bed chamber because it would be too much work to clean up. She did not deny that Kate might have arranged a murder, only that she would have had a male relative commit it outside the city.
