Daniel Swanders was the illegitimate son of Henry Carey and a peddler known to deal in stolen merchandise. He came upon two horses in the countryside, a full-sized stallion and a hobby. He stole the stallion and sold it. There was a well-dressed man at the scene where Daniel saw the horses; Daniel did not know him but told Robert Carey that he would recognize him if he saw him again.
